Adoption in our family

how Mae joined our family

Adoption is already a very meaningful part of our family. We were blessed to become parents through the adoption of our daughter, Mae, and that experience has shaped the way we understand family.

From the beginning, we have wanted adoption to be something that is talked about openly and positively in our home. As Mae grows, we want her to always feel comfortable asking questions, talking about her story, and knowing that every part of who she is is loved and celebrated.

We are incredibly grateful for the relationship we have with Mae’s birth family. Even though we live in different states, we have traveled to visit them, and they have traveled to visit Mae. We also stay connected by sharing pictures and updates through an app almost every week. We talk about Mae’s birth family with love and respect and want her to grow up knowing who they are and how much they love her.

our life together-

Our favorite family activities are often the simple ones. We love reading books with Mae, taking walks with her in the wagon, and spending time outside together. Sometimes that means a walk down our driveway, playing in the yard, swimming, or putting Mae in the hiking backpack and heading out to explore. On a typical evening, you can usually find us having dinner together, playing with Mae and Lois, reading books, and winding down as a family. Our weekends often include spending time with extended family, attending sporting events, being outdoors, or enjoying a slower day at home. Sundays usually include church and time with family.

OUR LOVE FOR THE OUTDOORS

We love being outside together, whether we are taking walks with Mae in the wagon, playing in the yard, swimming, or putting her in the hiking backpack and heading out to explore. Some of our favorite family moments are the simple ones spent outside together.

OUR LOVE FOR ADVENTURES

Traveling is also something we really enjoy as a family. Since becoming a family of three, we have already taken Mae to Maine, Florida, and Colorado, along with many trips up north and weekends at the lake. We love experiencing new places together and hope travel will continue to be a special part of our children’s lives.

Our love for others

We are incredibly close with our extended families and feel fortunate that family is part of both our everyday lives and our biggest celebrations. We spend lots of time together for dinners, birthdays, holidays, lake days, and everyday visits.

our sweet girl

Mae is a happy, curious, and silly little girl who keeps us laughing and on our toes! She loves being outside, swimming, reading books, spending time with her cousins, and doing things independently. She loves playing with our dog, Lois, pushing buttons on remotes, and will happily eat just about any kind of soup, her favorite food!

We are incredibly grateful for her birth family and the love they have for her. They continue to be an important part of Mae’s life and story, and we feel very fortunate that adoption has brought our families together.

Mae also absolutely loves babies and is always interested when she sees one. We think she will be a loving, curious, and involved big sister who will want to be right there helping, playing, and showing her sibling all the things she loves.

Family, faith, kindness, and spending meaningful time together are at the heart of the life we are building. We hope to give our children a strong foundation while encouraging them to grow into exactly who they are meant to be.

Family: Family is a huge part of our everyday life. We are fortunate to have grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins close by.

Faith: We want our children to grow up knowing that God loves them and is with them through every season of life.

Kindness: We hope to teach our children to be kind, compassionate, forgiving, grateful, and accepting of others.

Adventure: We love experiencing new places together and hope travel will continue to be a special part of our children’s lives.

Education: We want to provide our children with the opportunities and support they need to learn, grow, and be successful.

We met on Match.com in 2015 and were married on August 3, 2019.
Ellyn works as an administrator in education and loves having a family-friendly schedule with holidays, school breaks, and summers with her family.
Matt works as a technician for a pest control company and appreciates having a career that allows him to provide for his family while still making family time a priority.
We are incredibly close with our extended families and feel fortunate that family is part of both our everyday lives and our biggest celebrations.
Faith is the foundation of our family and the values we try to live by each day.
We recently built our home on an old family farmstead overlooking 200 acres, with Ellyn’s parents and sister living right next door on the same family land.
